Exclusive social event titled „Luxembourgs and Europeanism“ lecture and garden party, which will take place on May 2025, at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Luxembourg. The event is being held under the auspices of the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, H.E. Mrs. Barbara Karpetová.

The lecture “The Luxembourgs and Europeanism” focuses on the history of the Luxembourgs and their influence on Europe at that time. Topics include political, military, and cultural aspects, such as marriage policy, military and diplomatic achievements, and cultural patronage, which united much of the world at the time.

The lecture also addresses the elevation of Luxembourg to a duchy in 1354 and later, in 1815, to a grand duchy. It also examines the similar fates of Luxembourg and Bohemia when both countries temporarily lost their independence and regained it in a similar period (Luxembourg in the first half of the 19th century, Bohemia at the beginning of the 20th century).

The second part of the lecture deals with the present, including Luxembourg’s role in the creation of the Benelux, its role in the birth of the European Community, and its importance within NATO. These topics illustrate how relatively small states such as Luxembourg and the Czech Republic can play an important role in European and world politics.

The current Embassy of the Czech Republic in Luxembourg is in the villa of the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Pierre Werner, who played a key role in establishing the European Coal and Steel Community, which is considered the foundation of the European Union. He was also instrumental in the creation of the euro. The embassy is in the city center, next to the Grand Theater of Luxembourg, near the embassies of Spain and the USA.

As part of the event, GREAT EUROPE will present a reproduction of the archival document of Charles IV, which is stored in the National Archives in Prague, Archives of the Crown of Bohemia. With this important document, the County of Luxembourg was elevated to a duchy by the Roman-German and Bohemian King Charles IV on March 20, 1354.
